The Melbourne GP is underway–
At the start Mark Webber dropped back to 5th after a great start by Vettel, both Ferrari drivers, and Hamilton who takes 4th to start. By lap 3 Webber fell further behind and Kimi Rikkonen in the Lotus car overtook 4th from a noticeably slower Hamilton. After Vettel stopped for his first pit stop Raikkonen was making great time and moving up to third, while also closing down on first and second place Ferrari.
Lewis Hamilton was one of the last of the top 4 to pit and change from the soft tires to the medium tires. He also had a slight wing adjustment.
Sutil was one of the last to come in for medium tires after he took the lead, this held up the leaders because of his slower lap time with the soft tires on a dry track. This helped anyone that below 4th place to catch up with the leaders.
When Sutil finally made a pit stop Vettel followed for a second pit, Alonso took the the lead for a briefly during this time until his pit stop around lap 23.
Maldonado spun out of turn 1 in a single car incident into the dirt during lap 25 and Nico Rosberg had some problems as he came to a stop on the course. This put him out of the race with a possible gearbox problem from earlier this weekend.
A short burst of rain started just shy of lap 30/58.
#1 at this point is Raikkonen by 12.5 sec ahead of Hamilton. Alonso and Hamilton had a a great battle for 2nd before Hamilton pitted on lap 31.
Sutil and Force India look like at lap 38 to have a slight chance at a podium spot, but because of a poor tire choice Sutil’s tires where worn down and he fell away all the way back to #7 by lap 50
As of lap 41 there had been 7 different leaders of this race.
During lap 45 Sutil gave up 2nd place to Alonso after some massive help from his DRS. Raikkonen still remained out in front by more than 7.5 seconds with less than 13 laps to go.
Kimi Raikkonen took the checkered flag followed by Fernando Alonso and rounding out the top three was a distant Sebastian Vettel. Nobody could catch Kimi today!
